This exercise trains the tensing and thus the lifting of the soft palate.
Before you begin, use the approaches described in the tutorial to first consciously sense and activate your soft palate. For example, yawn with your mouth closed, or purse your lips and imagine pressing a jet of water out of your mouth. Make sure your lower jaw stays released and flexible at the back (to help, picture the water jet spraying downward). Maintain this soft palate engagement while singing the exercise.
In this exercise, a slightly modified version of the basic melody 12345 54321 is used. As usual, use AEIOU in the „singing vowel“ form. Pay attention that in wau you shape the letter W as a “V” (like the German “W”)—not as a “U.”
